Bless And Keep1 Chronicles 4:10

He Asked and It Was Granted

This message is for the classroom assistant who has never in her life asked God to bless her because she believes asking for a blessing on herself is greed

Give her a prayer list and she is magnificent.

She keeps it in the back of a notebook and it is not sentimental, it is operational. Names, dates, what happened. Mrs Okafor's hip. The boy in Year Four whose dad has gone. The teacher who cried in the stock cupboard in November and does not know anybody saw. Her sister's mortgage. A woman from her old road she has not spoken to in six years and prays for anyway.

She has been doing this for twenty-two years and there is no performance in it. Nobody has ever seen the notebook.

And here is what is not in it.

Her.

Not once. Not her name, not her health, not the situation at work that has been eating her since February, not the thing about her knees, not the fact that she is fifty-five and has not had a proper holiday since her mother died. There is one line in that entire notebook that even gestures at herself, written in 2019, and it says: help me be more patient.

Which is not a request for a blessing. That is a request to be improved so she can be more use.

If you asked her, she would not say she was unworthy. She would say something that sounds much more reasonable and is much harder to shift.

She would say: it feels greedy.

He Asked and It Was Granted

There is a man in the Bible who asked for exactly this, out loud

Right in the middle of nine chapters of genealogy in 1 Chronicles, which is the part of the Bible nobody reads on purpose, the list stops dead for two verses and tells you about a man called Jabez.

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. And God granted him that which he requested (1 Chronicles 4:10).

Read what he actually asks for. Bless me. Enlarge my territory. Your hand on me. Keep me from harm. There is not one other person in that prayer. It is entirely, unembarrassedly, about him.

And the verse after it does not say God rebuked him for it. It says God granted him that which he requested.

You have permission to ask, and it was never greed. The word put that prayer in the record on purpose, in the middle of a list of names, where a woman who prays for everybody else would eventually find it, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an ancient sentence and lays it against a modern conscience until the conscience gives way.

What your generosity has quietly become

Now I am going to teach you plainly, because you are a woman who prefers plain.

Praying for other people is good. It is one of the best things a person can do with a life and you have done it for twenty-two years and there are people walking about today who have no idea they have been carried.

But somewhere along the way, leaving yourself out stopped being generosity and became a rule. And a rule about God's willingness is a doctrine, whether or not you ever meant to write one. The doctrine you have been living under says: He gives to those I bring, and I am the one who brings, and a person who brings does not also receive.

That is a hierarchy, and it is not in the book anywhere.

You are not the staff, and you have never once been outside the circle you carry. Scripture says He gives to all men liberally and does not scold anyone for asking (James 1:5), and that word liberally means He gives generously and without holding back, and the Spirit of God is not running a system where the one who intercedes has to go without.

Bless me indeed

There is a small word in that prayer that most people skip and it is the one I want to leave with you.

Bless me indeed. Not bless me a bit. Not bless me if there is any left over after everybody on the list. Indeed, in that phrasing, is an intensifier, the Hebrew habit of doubling a word to say I really mean this. He is saying: bless me, actually bless me, properly.

He asked like that in front of God and it is written down without a single word of criticism attached.

You have been invited to ask plainly and to leave the apology off the end of the sentence. The written word records the request and the granting in the same breath, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives a person the confidence to come in without hedging, because Scripture calls it coming boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).

And this site does not sell outcomes, so I will say it straight. Asking for a blessing over your own life is not a lever, and nothing here guarantees what next February looks like. What is settled is that the asking is permitted, that it was never greed, and that a woman who can put her own name in a sentence prays differently from a woman who cannot.

The breakthrough

So today, one prayer goes into the notebook with your name on it.

Not a request to be improved. Not help me be more patient, which is a request for better performance dressed as a prayer. A plain, unhedged, unapologetic ask: God, bless me indeed.

You are going to feel the apology rise up in you about two seconds after you say it. Do not say the apology. Let the sentence stand on its own without a qualifier stapled to the end. That is the whole exercise and it is going to be harder than twenty-two years of intercession.

You are inside the circle you have been carrying, and you always were. The word says God granted Jabez what he requested and did not correct the request, and it is the Holy Spirit who is at this moment giving a woman who has never asked the confidence to open her mouth about herself.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak. You are in Christ, and in Him you are family and not staff, so the standing to ask for yourself was given to you and is not something you have to earn by service. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about February and your knees and the thing at work is His to decide, and He may answer in a way you would not have written. What He has said about who may ask is not in dispute.

  1. Rule that says the one who carries the list does not go on it, you are not humility and you are not staying. Scripture says God granted Jabez what he requested, and He wrote no rebuke beside it, so today my own name goes on the page.
  2. Shame that rises the second I ask for myself, you have no ground to stand on here. In the name of Jesus I come boldly, because the word says He gives to all liberally and does not scold anybody for asking, and I am done stapling an apology to the end of my sentences.
  3. Father, bless me indeed and keep Your hand on me, and I am saying it without adding anything to it. I thank You that by Your Spirit I am inside the circle I have been carrying, and I have been the whole time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
