Blessed Are You1 Chronicles 29:10

David Blessed Him in Front of Everybody

This message is for the father who says grace over dinner as a formality and has never once told God out loud at his own table what God has done

Nine words. He has timed it, not on purpose.

Lord, thank You for this food. Bless it. Amen.

Every night, in the same tone, in the same rhythm, in about four seconds, with his hand already reaching. His children have heard it perhaps four thousand times. His youngest could do it as an impression and once did, at a birthday, and everybody laughed, and he laughed too, and something in him went slightly cold for a second and then he forgot about it.

He is not a hypocrite. He means it, in the way you mean a thing you have said four thousand times, which is a real but very thin kind of meaning.

Here is what he has never done at that table.

He has never said out loud, in front of his family, a single specific thing God has done. Not one. Not the year the job came back. Not his mother's last six months, which were better than anybody had any right to expect. Not the thing in 2021 that only he and his wife know about, that should have ended them and did not.

His children know that he prays. They have no idea what he thinks God has done, because he has never told them, because grace is nine words and grace is the only place at that table where God comes up.

And they are getting older. The eldest is fifteen and asks better questions than he can answer, and the window in which a father's ordinary sentences shape a household is not going to stay open indefinitely.

David Blessed Him in Front of Everybody

A king blessed God out loud in front of everybody

There is a scene near the very end of David's life which almost nobody preaches and which is exactly the scene for a man at a table.

The whole assembly is gathered. Everything has been given for the building of the temple, more than anybody expected. And then this: wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever (1 Chronicles 29:10).

He blessed the LORD before all the congregation. Out loud. In front of everyone. And what follows is not nine words. He names what God is, and what God owns, and what God has done, and where everything they have just given actually came from, and he does it as an old man in front of a nation that is watching how a king talks to God.

That is the last public thing he does of any real significance. He does not give a speech about the temple. He blesses God, out loud, where people can hear it.

You have been given a mouth and a table and people who are listening. Scripture puts that moment in the record deliberately, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a spoken sentence at an ordinary table more than a noise, because the word says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and He is the one who fills the heart.

What your children have learned from four thousand graces

I am going to say this warmly, because you are a good father and this is not an accusation.

Your children have learned, from four thousand repetitions, that God is real, that He is thanked, and that the thanking takes four seconds and comes before food. That is genuinely something. A great many children learn much less.

What they have not learned, because you have never said it out loud, is that God does things. Specific things. In this family. With names and dates attached.

And that gap matters more than the length of the prayer, because a child can dismiss a formula at nineteen without ever losing anything, and a child cannot so easily dismiss the memory of his father saying, at a table, with his voice going slightly: this happened, and God did it.

You have a house full of evidence and you have never once said it out loud in that room. The word says tell the generation following (Psalm 48:13), and it says it as an instruction to ordinary people rather than to professionals, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a specific memory to a man's mind at the exact moment he needs it.

Blessing God is not a performance and it is not long

Now let me take the pressure off, because I know what has just happened in your chest.

You are picturing something long. A testimony. A speech at your own dinner table with everybody looking at you and the food going cold, and you have decided in advance that you would rather do the nine words, and honestly I do not blame you.

That is not what this is.

A blessing is one sentence. Blessed are You, Lord, who did this. Name the thing. Sit down. Eat.

It is short by design, because the shape it teaches is more important than the length, and because a thing that takes eight seconds can be done every night, and a thing that takes four minutes will be done twice and then quietly abandoned.

You are able to do this tonight, in one sentence, without becoming a different kind of man. Scripture calls it the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name (Hebrews 13:15), which puts it in the mouth rather than in the personality, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the work while a man says something quite short with his hand on the table.

And this site does not oversell, so hear this straight. Saying it does not guarantee what your fifteen-year-old does with it. Nothing here promises an outcome in another person, and it never will. What is settled is that a father who names what God has done at his own table has told the truth in the room where it counts most, and the telling is his to do and the rest is God's.

The breakthrough

So tonight, before the food, you are going to say ten words instead of nine.

Not a speech. Not a testimony. One sentence, at your own table, in front of your own people: blessed are You, Lord, who did this thing.

Pick something real and specific. The job. Your mother's six months. The thing in 2021, if you can, and if you cannot, pick something smaller and true, because a small true thing said out loud is worth more than a large one saved for a day that never comes.

Your voice may go. Let it go. Your fifteen-year-old will notice that more than anything you have said at that table in a decade.

You have the standing to bless God out loud in front of your household. A king did it before a whole congregation and the word wrote it down as the right and ordinary thing to do, and it is the Holy Spirit who lands a father's short sentence on the people sitting round his table.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak. You are in Christ, and Scripture calls those who are His a royal priesthood, so the standing to bless God out loud in front of your own household was given to you and does not belong to somebody more qualified. The word is the ground under every line here and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What He does in your children is His to decide and He may answer in a way and at a pace you never see. What He has said about a mouth telling the next generation is already written.

  1. Nine words I have said four thousand times, you are not wrong and you are not enough on your own. Scripture says David blessed the LORD before all the congregation, and tonight my table gets one true sentence about what God has actually done.
  2. Fear of my own voice going in front of my children, you do not get to keep this house quiet. In the name of Jesus I say it out loud at my own table, because the word tells us to tell the generation following, and telling is a thing done with a mouth.
  3. Father, blessed are You, who did this, and my hand is on the wood and my people are listening. I thank You that by Your Spirit one short sentence in this room tonight is worth more than a speech I keep saving for a better day.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
