Blessing My LineProverbs 20:7

The Children After Him

This message is for the man who is the first in four generations to stay, and is afraid that staying is not enough to leave anything

His father left when he was six. His grandfather left when his father was nine. And his great-grandfather, according to a story nobody in that family tells at Christmas, left twice.

He is forty-four and he has been in the same house for eighteen years.

That is it. That is the whole achievement, and when he says it out loud, which he almost never does, it sounds like nothing. He has not built anything. He has no money to leave. He is not a man anybody would put at the front of a room, and he has said perhaps four thousand fewer words to his children about God than he thinks he should have.

He just did not go.

Through a bad two years when the work dried up. Through a season when the marriage was, honestly, mostly logistics. Through his own mother dying and the six months after it when he was not much use to anybody.

He did not go.

And here is the fear, which arrives about once a month, usually in the car: that not going is a negative achievement. That you cannot hand a child an absence of a thing. That his kids will inherit no fortune and no story and no wisdom, only the fact that nothing bad happened, which nobody notices and nobody thanks you for.

The Children After Him

The just man walking, and what happens after him

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him (Proverbs 20:7).

Read that twice, because it is short and it is doing something specific.

The just man walketh. Not builds. Not achieves. Not says the right things at the right moments. Walks, which is the plainest verb available and means going on, day after day, in the same direction.

In his integrity. Which in the older sense means wholeness, being one piece, the same man on Tuesday as on Sunday.

And then the second half, and notice it is not a reward for something extra: his children are blessed after him.

The blessing on the children is attached to the walking. Not to a fortune, not to a speech, not to a moment. To a man who kept going in the same direction.

You are already doing the thing the proverb attaches the blessing to. That is what the verse says the mechanism is, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an ordinary staying into something a family carries, because Scripture says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love.

Not going is not nothing

Now let me handle the fear in the car, because it is wrong and it has been running for years.

You believe you cannot hand a child an absence. But look at what your children actually have, and count it as a positive rather than as a lack.

They have never once had the conversation where somebody explains where their father went. They have never had to hold two houses in their heads. They have never learned, at six, that a man in a photograph is somebody who used to live here.

That is not an absence of harm. That is the presence of a floor, and a floor is a thing, and they are standing on it right now while eating cereal and not thinking about it at all, which is exactly what a floor is for.

You have given your children a floor and it is not nothing. The word says a just man walking in his integrity has children blessed after him, and it says nothing about a fortune, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an unremarkable presence into an inheritance in a family.

Four generations, and the one who stopped

There is a thing worth saying about lines and about you.

Nobody in your family stopped that pattern for four generations, and the reason is not that they were all bad men. It is that a pattern is heavy, and it is invisible, and everyone inside it thinks they are simply doing what people do.

You stopped it by staying. Not by understanding it, not by naming it, not by working through it with anybody. By being in the house on the Tuesday when it would have been easier not to be, eighteen years running.

And that has broken something that four generations did not break, and there is nobody in your family who is going to tell you so, because the men who would have noticed are all gone and your children do not know it happened.

You are the one it stopped with, and the stopping was done by staying. Scripture says he that endureth to the end shall be saved (Matthew 24:13), and endurance is the least glamorous virtue in the book and the one most often attached to outcomes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies it, which means the eighteen years were never a matter of your own grit.

And I will be straight, because you would smell anything else. Nothing here promises you what your children do at twenty-five. That is theirs and it is God's and it is not mine to sell. What is settled is that the proverb attaches the blessing to the walking, and you have been walking for eighteen years.

The breakthrough

So today you stand in that house and you say the verse out loud in it.

The house matters. Not because it is impressive; it is not, and there is a patch in the hall you have been meaning to do for four years. Because it is the physical location of the thing you did, and a man who has been told for years that his achievement is invisible needs to say a sentence about it in the actual place.

Both feet on the floor. Read the proverb. And then say the second half again on its own, out loud, with your own children in mind and their names in it.

You are a man walking in his integrity, and the word says what happens after him. Scripture attaches the blessing on the children to the walking of the father, and it is the Holy Spirit who runs a thing like that down a line, so eighteen years of simply not going turns out to have been the mechanism all along.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, standing in that hall. You are in Christ, and the integrity you have been walking in is His work in you and was given to you rather than mustered. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does in your children over the next twenty years is His to decide and He may answer in ways you never hear about. What He has said about a just man walking and the children after him is written plainly.

  1. Fear that arrives in the car once a month, you are not the truth about my house. Scripture says the just man walks in his integrity and his children are blessed after him, and the blessing in that verse is fastened to the walking and not to a fortune.
  2. Idea that staying is a negative thing, you are put out of this hall today. In the name of Jesus I count the floor as a thing, because the word says he that endures to the end shall be saved, and enduring was never glamorous and was always the point.
  3. Father, I have walked in this house for eighteen years and You say my children are blessed after me. I thank You that by Your Spirit the staying was the mechanism, and the pattern that ran four generations stopped in this hall.
