He can define favor. He has done it, out loud, at a table, more than once, and done it well enough that people have written it down.
He can tell you what the Hebrew word carries. He can tell you where the idea sits in the covenant. He can distinguish it from luck, from prosperity teaching, from sentiment, and he can do all of that in about four minutes without notes.
And on Tuesday morning, at about ten past eight, walking to the corner, he carries himself like a man who is hoping to get through the day without anything going wrong.
That is the whole article, really. There is a gap in him between what he knows and how he walks, and the gap is not hypocrisy, because he is not pretending anything. It is simply that his knowledge has stayed in the room where he learned it, which is a study, and it has never once come out onto a street with him.
He noticed it because of a line in a psalm he had read a hundred times, and the line does not define anything, which is why it got past him for years.
Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.
They shall walk. In the light of it. Not: they shall correctly describe it.
The verse is about a walk, not a definition
Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance (Psalm 89:15).
There are two verbs and they are doing different work.
Know the joyful sound. That is the first, and it is about recognition, about a people who have heard something and can tell what it is. You have that. You have it in unusual measure.
They shall walk. That is the second, and it is about locomotion. About a body going down a street. In the light of Your countenance, which is to say: in the shining of the face, as a condition a person moves around inside rather than a doctrine a person holds.
The psalm puts them in that order, and it does not treat the second as optional.
You have knowledge that was always meant to become a way of walking. That is the plain structure of the verse, and it is the Holy Spirit who moves truth from a study out onto a street, because Scripture says if we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), which is precisely the distinction being made.
Where knowledge goes to be stored instead of used
Let me say something about how this happens to a man like you, because it happens to nearly everybody who is good at this.
Knowledge is stored where it is acquired. That is not a spiritual failing, it is how a mind works. What you learn in a study belongs, in your memory, to a study, and it gets retrieved when you are in a study or in a conversation that resembles one.
The corner at ten past eight resembles nothing. There is no book there. So the knowledge does not fire, and what fires instead is whatever your body learned about ordinary mornings a long time ago, which in your case is something like: brace, and get through.
You are able to carry this onto a street and it has always been portable. The word says His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23), which is a statement located at exactly the hour you are talking about, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is described as bringing things to remembrance, which is a service aimed at the moment rather than at the desk.
Countenance is a walking word here
One point of language, and then I will leave it alone, because this site is Hebraic in subject and the language is a window and never the view.
The word rendered countenance is the ordinary word for a face, and the psalm has people walking in its light, which is a picture drawn from a lamp carried in front of somebody on a road at night. Light that moves with the walker. Not light in a building you visit.
That is what a shining face is in this verse: illumination that travels with a person through their day.
You are walking in a light that moves with you and does not stay in a room. Scripture puts the walking and the countenance in one clause deliberately, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a carried light real on a Tuesday, because the word says His anointing abides in us rather than visiting us.
And I will be plain, because you would notice a claim that outran the text. Saying this does not deliver a felt sense of favor on Tuesday and there is no promise here about your mood at ten past eight. What is settled is that the verse describes a walk, and a man who says it at his own door has moved a true thing out of a study for the first time.
So tomorrow morning, before you leave the house, the verse gets said standing up, at the door, in the clothes you are going to work in.
Not in the study. That is the whole point, and if you take it back to the desk you will have turned a walking verse into a reading one, which is exactly the move that has kept this in a room for years.
At the door. Coat on. Out loud: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of Your countenance.
And then walk out, and let the sentence be about the pavement rather than about the psalm.
You have a face shining on you that comes with you down the street. The word puts the walking and the countenance in the same clause, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a carried light actual at ten past eight, so a man's knowledge and a man's morning can finally be the same thing.
Declare this over yourself
Now speak, standing at the door. You are in Christ, and the favor you can define so well was given to you in Him rather than reached by understanding it correctly. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about Tuesday and everything in it is His to decide, and He may answer in a way you have not read about. What He has said about walking in the light of His countenance is written as a description of ordinary people going somewhere.
- Gap between the study and the street, you are closing this morning at ten past eight. Scripture says they shall walk in the light of Thy countenance, and walk is a word about a body on a pavement and not a word about a page.
- Habit of bracing through an ordinary day, you are put out at this door. In the name of Jesus I go out under a light that travels, because the word says His mercies are new every morning, and morning is exactly the hour I have been bracing in.
- Father, Your countenance shines and I am walking in the light of it today, and I am saying so at the door and not at the desk. I thank You that by Your Spirit this comes with me down the street, and I have known where it was for years and today I am standing in it.
