Kept By HimPsalm 16:1

Preserve Me, for in You I Take Refuge

This message is for the man who prays for what he wants and has never once prayed to be kept, because he thinks keeping is a small ask

He has a good prayer life and a complete blind spot in it, and he found the blind spot on a Tuesday by accident.

He was reading Psalm 16, which he has read many times, and he stopped at the first line, which he has never once stopped at.

Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

Preserve me. That is the opening request of the whole psalm. Before the good inheritance, before the pleasant places, before the cup and the lot and the path of life, the first thing the psalmist asks for is to be kept.

And he sat there with his tea going cold and worked out, slowly, that in thirty years of praying he had never once asked God for that.

He has asked for wisdom. He has asked for provision, and for his children, and for the situation at work, and for the health of a friend, and for the country, and he means all of it. His list is long and it is not selfish and it is not shallow.

But keeping is not on it. And when he tried to work out why, the answer that came back was slightly embarrassing.

He had always thought of it as a small ask. A sort of tidying-up prayer. The thing you say at the end when you have run out of proper requests.

Preserve Me, for in You I Take Refuge

The psalm opens with it, and that is the argument

Look at where the request sits.

Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust (Psalm 16:1).

Verse one. First line. Not tacked on at the end after the substantial matters have been dealt with, but placed at the head of the psalm as the foundation everything after it rests on. And what follows in that psalm is some of the richest language in the whole book about inheritance and gladness and the path of life.

The order is not accidental. A man asks to be kept, and then talks about goodness, because a man who is not kept cannot hold on to any goodness he receives.

You have been leaving out the request that everything else stands on. That is the structure of the psalm, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old poem's architecture speak to a man in an armchair, because Scripture says all of it was given by inspiration and is profitable for exactly this sort of correction.

Keeping is the largest ask there is

Now let me argue the case, because you are a man who wants the reasoning and not the sentiment.

Consider what you have asked for over thirty years. Wisdom. Provision. Your children. Every one of those is a good given at a moment in time.

Now consider what keeping is. Keeping is the guarantee that a good given at a moment survives the years after it. It is what stands between a gift and its loss. Every single thing you have prayed for and received requires keeping in order to still be there in a decade, which means keeping is not a small request sitting beside the big ones. It is the request the others depend on.

A man who receives everything and is not kept ends up with nothing. A man who is kept keeps what he was given.

You are asking a God who both gives and guards, and you have only ever used half of what He does. The word says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights (James 1:17) and also says He is able to keep you from falling (Jude 24), and both of those are His, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the seal on what has been given, which is a keeping word and not a giving one.

Refuge is a place, and it has a door

There is a second half to that verse that explains why the request is reasonable.

For in thee do I put my trust. Some translations render it: for in You I take refuge, and refuge is a physical picture. It is a rock, a stronghold, a place a person actually goes into.

Which means asking to be preserved is not asking God to do you a small favor. It is a man saying: I have come inside, and I am asking the owner of the building to do what the owner of a building does.

You are inside a refuge and you are permitted to ask its owner to hold the door. Scripture calls the name of the LORD a strong tower which the righteous runs into and is safe (Proverbs 18:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a metaphor like that into a felt safety in an ordinary week rather than a nice image on a page.

And I will be plain, because you would notice otherwise. Asking to be kept does not promise you an untroubled decade. Nothing here says the situation at work resolves or that your children have easy lives. What is guaranteed is the keeper, not the itinerary, and a man who has learned to ask for keeping prays about everything else from inside a building rather than out in the open.

The breakthrough

So tonight the prayer starts differently, and it starts with the request you have never made.

Before the wisdom, before the children, before the situation at work, before the country. Four words, out loud: preserve me, O God.

And then the reason, because the psalm gives it and it is not a small reason: for in You I take refuge.

Then pray everything else exactly as long as you always do. Nothing gets cut. The list is good and it stays. It simply stops being the first thing.

You have a refuge with an owner who keeps what is inside it. The word puts preserve me at the head of a psalm about inheritance and gladness and the path of life, and it is the Holy Spirit who lands that on a man at a table with a book open, so a thirty year gap can close tonight in about four words.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak. You are in Christ, and the refuge you are standing inside was opened to you by Him and is yours by union rather than by merit. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about your children and your work and everything else on your list is His to decide, and He may answer in ways you have not asked for. What He has said about being a refuge and a keeper is written at the top of the psalm.

  1. Blind spot thirty years wide, you are named tonight and you are closing. Scripture says preserve me, O God, for in Thee do I put my trust, and that request sits at the head of the psalm and not at the end of it.
  2. Idea that keeping is a small ask, you are put out of this study. In the name of Jesus I take the word that says He is able to keep me from falling, and everything I have ever been given needs keeping in order to still be here in ten years.
  3. Father, preserve me, for in You I take refuge, and I am saying it first and not last. I thank You that by Your Spirit I am inside a strong tower tonight, and now I will bring You the rest of my list.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
