Kept By Him2 Timothy 1:12

Somebody Else Is Watching It

This message is for the man at the corner café table who believes God gave him the friend across from him, and cannot believe God is still watching the friendship, so he sits counting the ways it ends

The sugar sachets are in a row again. Four of them, edges squared to the edge of the table, and he did not notice his hands doing it until the friend across from him laughed and said, you and your little soldiers.

He laughs too, because it is funny, and because this friend is allowed to say it. That is the whole miracle, if anyone were asking. Fourteen years of eating lunch at his desk, of leaving the staff do after one drink, of practicing sentences on the walk to the bus stop and never using them. And then, from nowhere he could point to, a man from the Tuesday group who kept turning up. Who kept saying, same time next week? Who does not mind that he answers a beat late, or that he needs the seat with his back to the wall.

So here they are, on a Thursday, at the corner table with the wobble, and the friend is telling a long story about a fence and a neighbor and a dog, and it is a good story. And he is not listening to it. He is counting. He is counting the weeks this has lasted, and the ways it could stop. The friend's job might move. The friend might notice, eventually, how much work he is. The friend might simply, gently, stop texting, the way people do, and he would never be able to say what he had done wrong.

Yesterday he thanked God for this friendship out loud, in the kitchen, with actual tears. He meant it. He believes God gave it. What he cannot seem to believe, sitting here with the sachets in their row and the story going on without him, is that God is still in the room. That the One who gave the good thing did not hand it over and step back out onto the pavement. That anybody is watching it except him.

You know that table. Maybe yours is a marriage that has finally gone quiet in the good way, or a job that fits, or a son who calls now. It came, and you thanked Him, and you meant it. And ever since, you have been holding it with both hands, watching the door, doing the arithmetic on how it ends. I know that hold from the inside. I want to sit with you in it for a while before we say anything else.

Somebody Else Is Watching It

The blessing has two verbs

The old blessing, the one read over your head at the end of a thousand services, opens like this: the LORD bless you and keep you. Two verbs. Most of us only ever heard the first one.

Bless is the handing over. The friend, the marriage, the job, the child. Keep is a different word altogether, and in Hebrew it is shamar, the watchman's word: what a man does on a wall at night, what a gardener does with a gate. The blessing does not stop at giving. It says the same hand that gives, stays, and watches. And I think many of us have received the first verb with tears and never once let the second one land.

So let me name the place before we go anywhere. The tiredness in you has nothing to do with sleep. It is the tiredness of a person who has been on watch, alone, over something precious, for a long time. Every good day is a day it did not end yet. Every text answered is a stay of execution. The gift came, and it turned you into a night porter.

Here is what I am not going to do. I am not going to tell you the friend will never move, or the marriage will never falter, or the job will never end. Nobody in Scripture was promised that the thing would never be lost, and I do not carry the authority to promise it to you either. What Scripture promises is not the thing. It is the Keeper.

You have a Keeper, and He is awake right now. That is not my thought laid over your Thursday. It is written in Psalm 121, that the One who keeps you does not slumber, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that line off the page and makes it the room you are sitting in.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.Psalm 121:3-4

Read the shape of that. It does not say the road will be flat. It says your foot is watched. It does not say nothing bad comes at night. It says the watchman does not close his eyes. That is a different promise from the one you keep trying to extract from God by staying awake yourself, and it is a better one, because it does not depend on the road.

Paul was in a cell when he wrote to Timothy that he knew whom he had believed, and was persuaded that God was able to keep what he had committed to Him against that day. Look at what he was sure of. Not the verdict. Not the outcome of the trial. He was sure of the Keeper. And what he had committed to God was not a possession he could lock in a drawer. It was himself, his life, the whole of the work. He had put it in God's hands and stopped guarding it with his own.

You were given this good thing by a God who does not give and go. Scripture says every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, in whom there is no shadow of turning, and the Spirit who carried that gift to your door is the same Spirit who lives in the house. He did not deliver it and leave. That is the part your counting has never let you believe, and it is written down.

Jesus prayed it out loud the night before He died. Holy Father, keep them in Your name. While I was with them, I kept them, and not one was lost. He did not say, I gave them faith and now they must guard it. He handed the keeping upward. If the Son of God did not appoint Himself the sole night watchman over what the Father gave, then neither were you appointed to that post over your table.

And now the part where I have to be honest with you about your mouth. The way this stops is not that you feel it. It is that you say it. Jesus said that a person with faith no bigger than the seed you would sweep off a table can speak to a mountain and it moves. Speak to it. Not think about it, not privately hope, not count more carefully. Your mountain has a shape and it sits at your table with the sachets: the belief that you are the only one on watch. You have the standing to speak to that, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls the ones who are His both kept and keeping, both held and holding, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the words you say carry more than your voice.

The breakthrough

Something can happen at your table in the next few minutes, and it is not that the thing you love becomes unlosable. It is that you stop being its only guard.

You are kept, and what was given to you is kept with you. That is not a feeling I am asking you to work up. It is written into the oldest blessing there is, and it is the Spirit's work to make a written thing true in a body. Whether the friend stays, whether the door opens or shuts, is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than leaving you to hope I meant something bigger. What I can say without any hedge is that the watch is not yours alone. It never was. You were drafted onto a night shift nobody assigned you.

So put the arithmetic down. Not because it cannot happen. Because Somebody else is watching it, and He does not sleep.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the table if you can, or in the car afterwards. Not because the words are a lock and God is a door. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to name what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it is not something you have to earn by watching harder. What He does with the friend, the job, the marriage, is His to decide, and a good Keeper is allowed to keep things in ways I would not choose. What is not up for decision is who is on the wall tonight. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than your voice, so speak them.

  1. Good thing I keep counting, you were given and you are kept, and the giving and the keeping come from the same hand. It is written that every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, and He does not hand over and then step outside.
  2. Arithmetic of how this ends, get out of my Thursday, in the name of Jesus. The Spirit who carried this to my door lives in the house, and I am not the only one watching it.
  3. Lord, You are the Keeper and I am the kept, and I say so with the sugar sachets still in their row. What I have entrusted to You, You are able to guard, as it is written, and tonight I am going to sleep.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
